Stand Up To Suicide - What Does It Mean?
5 Simple Explanations
Acknowledge the magnitude of the societal catastrophe that is suicide.
Recognise that we have NOT reduced the figures for close to 20 years.
Educate yourself as to the measures we can ALL take to reduce the figures.
Be prepared (in whatever way you can manage) to help. Here are some examples: speak out, write to your MP, extend the hand of friendship to those who need your support, make an extra effort with a friend or colleague, ask why the UK suicide statistics have stagnated, listen and hear the voices of those who are vulnerable, ask yourself whether someone you know is trying to mask depression, anxiety or trauma, challenge attempts to sweep the subject of suicide under the carpet, take an interest in what your child’s school, college, university is doing to protect their students’ mental health, question headlines that refer to someone “admitting” depression, question those who use the phrase “committing” suicide, ask what your employer is doing to fulfil its legal obligation to protect the mental health of its workforce.
Look after your own mental fitness.
