Devon Mind’s “Scenic” Sunday 10K

One of our leading DMHA partners, Devon Mind, had their annual Plymouth Harbour 10K this Sunday (28th September). Our Administrator, Danielle Compton, took part for a second year and has recapped her experience of the “scenic” event.

Danielle said, “It was a beautiful autumn morning, we were really lucky, the sun was out but still there was a September chill - the perfect day for a run! The race started at 9am at Mountbatten Pier. The run takes you along the South West Coast Path running side-by-side with the waterfront.”

Sunshine bouncing off of Hooe Lake, there are boats in the water with colourful houses on the other side of the lake.

“There was an electric community spirit through Turnchapel, Hooe, and Oreston, with many out cheering us on. Some were out clapping on their front steps, cheering as they walked their dogs or playing music outside their front doors! When we made it half way, we had a water break just before crossing Laira Bridge - and we just had to stop to take in the view!”

“Around 7K is when it started to feel very tough, we were travelling through Cattedown and had made it back onto the South West Coast Path. It was a steep climb back up onto the coast path, but once you were at the top you could see for miles over the Plymouth Sound and out to sea. The sun was fully out at this point and the water was shimmering, it was just the encouragement we needed to keep going."

Plymouth Harbour in the sunshine, many boats in the harbour and a clear blue sky above.

“A big thank you to the Marshals who volunteered their time and were always giving us the boost we needed. One lovely lady at about the 9K mark, had a tub of sweets which was the perfect final boost to push us to the end! The last 1K took us around Plymouth Barbican right down to the waterfront where we were met with a cheering crowd, a medal, sweets and chocolates - Exactly what we needed! The feeling of crossing the finish line was incredible, a mix of pride, excitement and relief! Knowing the support this gives Devon Mind to keep advocating for better mental health in Devon, makes it even sweeter. The Plymouth Harbour 10K alone has helped me with my mental health by giving me a reason to get out and exercise with a clear goal to achieve, and to run next to such a stunning backdrop as the South West Coast Path gave me a clear head and kept me smiling. I would encourage anyone who is able to have a go to get involved, I was a beginner when I first tried the Plymouth Harbour 10K and now I will be doing it every year!”

Devon Mind offer both a Plymouth Harbour 10k and half marathon annually.
